Cultural information: The Galapagos Islands form an archipelago, a chain of islands 620 miles ( about 1.000 km ) west of Ecuador. The islands are all part of Ecuador's national park system. These islands are famous for their rare animals species not found anywhere else in the world. They are also known for the fact Charles Darwin based many of his ideas about the theory of evolution by natural selection on observations he made during his visit to the Galapagos Islands in 1835.
